You Can Still Get A BigLaw Job Despite The “Glut of Lawyers”

At first glance, this article in the Houston Chronicle is somewhat depressing/discouraging. It kicks off with a student who is graduating from University of Houston Law Center but doesn't yet have a job. According to the article: "He's making cold calls. He's introducing himself to lawyers who come to the school for lectures. He's even dropped in unannounced at law firms, something he discovered is frowned upon in the white-shoe world." Okay, hold on... let's unpack that a little. First of all, I think at any law firm, white-shoe or otherwise, big no-no on the dropping in "unannounced." Nobody wants to hire someone…

Low enrollment for law schools = better BigLaw job chances for grads.

As noted in this article posted in the UVA student newspaper: "The number of first-year law students has reached its lowest national level since 1973, according to an American Bar Association report." UVA law school credits this decline at their school not to "national trends" but to an "intentional effort" to lower student/faculty ratio.  Law school spin or not, the fact is that low enrollment numbers for law schools is actually great news for law students looking to break into BigLaw.  The applicant pool for BigLaw jobs is better now than it has been in several years.  According to the…

Law Students take note.

This excellent opinion piece in Newsweek is yet another reminder that the pool of candidates for jobs is smaller than it has been in years because law school enrollment has taken an unprecedented dip.  Of course the caveat is the reason behind the dip--less demand for legal services which means fewer jobs available for new lawyers. So how do you break into BigLaw in this environment? When summer associate classes have dropped from double to single digits? Especially when you aren't the first in your class or coming out of a "top" law school? The opportunities are there, but you have to be very…

Government Work Leads To BigLaw Success?

Interesting article on Law360.com: "A veteran litigator had an unorthodox suggestion for female BigLaw associates at a symposium in New York on Wednesday: Go into government." For various, mostly personal reasons, I did not take this path.  But I agree this is a common and rather successful way of asserting yourself in BigLaw, especially if you are a litigator and especially if you are interested in litigating white collar cases. Whether this path is more helpful to female attorneys is an interesting spin.  I think anyone, male or female, who can break into BigLaw should consider taking steps to also break into big government…
